Time management can be a challenge for community management teams. Of course you want to keep your residents taken care of, but being there for them on your own is something you simply cannot do 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. Improved time management allows you to be a better community manager, and allowing your staff a healthy work/life balance ensures your community will run like a well-oiled machine. A few tips for improving your time management are:

  • Try timeboxing at work -- Time boxing is a time management strategy where larger tasks are broken down into smaller tasks, with each small portion given a certain time limit you'd like that small task to be completed by. Time boxing helps to keep you on task to ensure you meet your small and manageable goals, while also allowing you easy areas to fit in breaks where needed.
  • "Eat the frog" method -- This method, with a funny name, alludes to the Mark Twain quote "If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning." This means that if you have a difficult, complex, or challenging task, it's always best to get it done straight away so you don't procrastinate, and you'll find the smaller tasks easier later.
  • Set aside planning time at the end of every day -- Having laid out plans to follow makes managing your time significantly easier. Rather than rushing through the morning planning out the day's tasks, use a small portion of your downtime at the end of the day to plan your tasks for the following. This lets you look at your time, your tasks, and what your day may look like with a clear and relaxed mind.
  • Use an app to snooze your phone -- One of the biggest distractors throughout the day in today's modern age is likely sitting on your desk, in your pocket, or in your hand right now. When you get those notifications coming in, it's difficult to let them go by without diverting your attention. There are a number of apps you can choose from, most free, to silence your notifications for a specific time period so you can really dig into the tasks at hand.
